Photos filming for 'Hinterland Water'

Pictures took during filming

Here are some pictures that were took during the day while filming for my short video and also some still shots from the film.

'Hinterland Water' Assembly Edit

My Assembly Edit of 'Hinterland Water'

As director, I have to make an assembly edit of my film. It took me time to do as I am not used to editing but I got there at the end and I really enjoyed putting this film together. As it is only an assembly edit, I had to just put the scenes and audio together but when I make the proper edit of this film, it would look much better as I would be adding possible a bit of music, titles, transitions etc to make it look more interesting and also it's a plot twist towards the end as the audience would think they are watching a remake of an opening scene of Hinterland but actually turns into an advert.

Due to blogger not letting my upload my assembly edit on here for some reason, my edited version will be on either disk or memory stick handed in to Dave.

'Hinterland Water' Final Script

Final Script

Due to changing the script on the day, I have added in what has been said in my film. I have used Liam as my voice over to be the advertiser, advertising the water bottle at the end.

Project 4 - 'HinterLand Water' Anlaysis

HinterLand Water

Here is a list of who's in my group and the roles within the group for this project.

My group:
Director - Kimberly McClarnan
Lights/Boom Operator - Rhianwen Davies
Camera Operator - Liam King
Production Sound Mixer - Emily Barresi

Actors:
Detective - Eduardo

Director -
For my role as director, I was in charge of everything. I really enjoyed being director and coming up with different ideas as it's very creative and also it made my feel more confident in telling people what to do. My first thought was to film the part where the detective goes in his room and thought we would use Emily room in Mount Pleasant Halls but then we realised that her room was too girly and small to film so instead we went in her kitchen to film. The kitchen was a better idea to film as it was very messy and in the scene in Hinterland, his caravan was also very messy. We followed the plan and also took a few extra different shots to see how it would go and what it would look like in the edit. After we finished filming in the kitchen, we headed outside to film Eduardo running through Mount Pleasant Campus back to his front door. We were very lucky with the weather as it was raining slightly in the afternoon but the time we went out to film, the weather change and it was lovely. From some shots we took, we had changed the scene slightly as one of the shots after Eduardo speaks on this phone, he looks straight into the camera giving a 'Zoolander' look which made us all laugh and made me think that we could do a plot twist and actually turn this into an advert (which was my first original plan and idea) at the end and the audience wouldn't expect it to happen. We had Liam doing a voiceover at the end advertising 'Hinterland Water' which we all found good and funny to do for our final film.

Overall Performance -
In my opinion, I really enjoyed directing and enjoyed the day filming for this. We all followed the plan I made and all helped eachother out. As I said, from doing this it has given me more confidence and ideas to look further into for next year when we do more stuff like this as groups or individually. The only thing I couldn't decide on was to actually make the scene from Hinterland or change it slightly towards the end for when Eduardo did that look which made us all laugh and gave me an idea to change it into an advert which I did as that was my first plan of doing an advert for this. Everyone in my group worked well on their role and I was very happy on how it all ended up and resulted.

Problems? -
There were a few problems during this as we were supposed to have another boy to act but he had to drop out so I asked around and luckily enough Eduardo was available to help us out. When we were filming in the kitchen, it took a lot of time as it was pretty hard for Liam to film as there wasn't much space so he had to sit up on the units to check if the shot in focus etc. As the whole scene in the kitchen took a while it resulted in losing time and Eduardo had to go in a certain time so the running scene we had to rush a bit and we couldn't go where we originally planned to go film as it was quite a long walk so we just ended up filming him running through Mount Pleasant campus looking like he's had a long run and going back to his room.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment while filming

While filming for my short one minute film, I picked out a few points which could be dangerous. I wrote down some points and when I got home I downloaded a template and filled in a risk assessment form which is very important. The reason why it's important and need is because they form an integral part of a good occupational health and safety management plan. They help to create awareness of hazards and risks during my set. Identify who may be at risk are employees, cleaners, visitors, contractors, the public, etc.

Final Film - Hinterland Script

Hinterland Script

When making a film or Tv programme, we all must upload a script onto here. In the opening scene of Hinterland, only one thing is been said but I thought I should upload it onto here as it will be important. At the moment, I am keeping the scene simple and short like the one on Hinterland, but I may add in few more lines in for the script if it goes to plan.

Final Film - Plan

My Plan

As director, I have made a plan which consists off who doing what in my group, the location, the actor, what scene we are doing, sounds and most importantly the shot types that I want when we shoot the film very soon. It is very important to make a plan to have and to give it to my group on the day because we all know then what my plan is and what exactly I want and hopefully it will be quickly made as I have already listed the shot types I want in order so hopefully if we all follow the plan, it would turn out great for us all.

Final Film Ideas

Ideas

As for our final film and I'm director, I am aloud to do whatever short film I would like. My first original idea was to create my own TV advert  but due to short timing, other assignments to do etc, I thought it would be easier just to recreate a TV or a film scene. This reason why I have gone to this plan is because we can just watch back the scene back and copy their camera shots, look for a similar location etc.

I have chosen to recreate the opening scene of the TV Programme 'Hinterland'. My lecture as shown the class the opening scene and I have never seen the programme but the reason why I have chosen to recreate this is because it looks pretty straight forward as the opening scene is just a shot of the police man basically running for 30 seconds back to his caravan and then cuts to when he is inside drinking his water and his phone starts to ring and the only word he says in the scene is 'Mathias'. My group has agreed with me for recreating this as its pretty straight forward to do and also easy to copy the scene.

Hinterland is a noir crime drama set in Aberystwyth, Wales, where troubled DCI Tom Mathias solves murders while searching for redemption.

Director Research

Director

For our final one minute film, my role for this is being the director. Before I actual start planning what film to make, I went on the internet and done some research properly on the directors role to help me understand more.

Heres a link where I got all my research from: http://creativeskillset.org/job_roles/758_director

Directors are responsible for creatively translating the film's written script into actual images and sounds on the screen. They are ultimately responsible for a film's artistic and commercial success or failure. Directors may write the film's script or commission it to be written, or they may be hired after an early draft of the script is complete. They must then develop a vision for the finished film and work out how to achieve it. During pre-production, Directors make crucial decisions, such as selecting the right cast, crew and locations for the film. They then direct rehearsals and the performances of the actors once the film is in production. They also manage the technical aspects of filming including the camera, sound, lighting, design and special effects departments. During post production, Directors work closely with Editors through the many technical processes of editing, to reach the final cut or version of the film. At all stages, Directors are responsible for motivating the team to produce the best possible results. Directors must also always be aware of the constraints of the film's budget and schedule and manage the expectations of the film's financiers.

From getting and reading this information, it has given me a better understand of my role and what I have to do and my jobs to carry out which should be interesting and fun. I think I would enjoy being director because I enjoy coming up with new ideas so it should be interesting.

Sound Report - News Report

Sound Report

While we were filming for the news report, I brought with me a sound report so I can write down all of the scenes and takes we had taken and write next to them which ones were the best sounds and takes to use. The report is very useful and handy because it helps and keeps us on track when it comes to editing our films.

I used a template on the internet in order to fill the sound report in properly.

Pictures took during News Report

Here are some pictures that were took during filming for the news report in the studio and on location. Also some stills from some shots we took.

Project 3 - News Report Analysis

News Report

Here a list of who's in my group and the roles within the group for this project.

My group:

Director - Emily Barresi
Lights/Boom Operator - Liam King
Camera Operator - Rhianwen Davies
Production Sound Mixer - Kimberly McClarnan

Actors:

Anchor - Adam Shailer
Reporter - Matthew Davies
Witness - John Rose

Production Sound Mixer -

For my role, I had to collect all the sound equipment from the stores in University and also make sure that I had spare batteries with me just incase and a SD card. I set up all the sound equipment so we were ready to start filming. As Liam's job was the Gaffer, he also helped me by holding the for me. Before we could all start filming, I had to check if the volumes were correct and making sure that when Adam starts to talk, the volume would hit just about -12 which is the correct volume. I had some test runs to double check to see if they are perfect for the actors other wise there would be problems when it comes to editing the audio and trying to lower the volume.

Overall Performance -
For filming this project, it was hard because we couldn't get the lighting right for the green screen and we were there for ages to figure out how to get it right and also that we had until we all came back after easter because we had to film the location again due to time. But apart from all of that, I enjoyed creating news report, we all helped each other, especially when it came to getting the lighting right from the green screen as Liam was struggling a bit but it was really fun to make. When we came back from Easter, straight away we all met up and filmed the location bit for the reporter and witness so we could get it done as soon as possible so we could move on to our final film. I enjoyed my role in sound, I found it very interesting and fun to do and would love to do it again.

Problems? -

There were loads of problems and issues during this project. One of the actors that our Director Emily had planned had dropped out last minute on us so we asked about and couldn't get anyone to help us for being the anchor so our only option was to ask our lecture Adam if he could be the Anchor which he agreed to do. As I said, there were problems with the lighting for the green screen so that took a lot of time to get right and it took us a lot of time to get an anchor so we wasted a lot of time and that resulted when we finished inside in the studio we were ready to film outside on location but the problem was that it started to rain, the battery on the camera was very low and loads of people were walking past, talking and cars which was all heard when I was on sound so we had to finish there and all agreed to meet up when we come back from our Easter break. When we came back from Easter and started to film for the on location bit again, there was another big problem as we had someone to do the witness part but they also dropped out last minute on us and also Rhianwen who was supposed to be camera operator wasn't in due to illness but luckily enough, one of the boys in my class John was free and agreed to help us to be our witness and also to take over Rhianwen's part of being camera operator.

Helping out with Another Group

My friend Elesha who is in another group, as she was director, she asked me if I could help her with her News Report as she was short on crew members. My job was being the boom operator, helping Matthew who was on sound to get the right audio for their news report. They only needed my help when they were in the studio filming for the anchor scene.

Practice for News Report - B-Roll

News Report - B-Roll

Today for Adam's lesson, to finish off our practice news report that Dave has asked us, we had to create a B-Roll. B-Roll is basically a broadcast TV as supplemental footage inserted as a cutaway to help tell the story and includes the shots that are shown to introduce a segment and/or in between the live or taped interviews.

We were set into groups and got given the script that Dave created and we all had to go outside around Mount Pleasant campus and film some short still videos of the buildings around the campus to help tell the story of where the incident happen.

We took some shots of the Mount Pleasant Campus sign, Mount Pleasant halls, the little hill where the incident happened and also the water fountain inside the campus.

This lesson was helpful because we didn't really know what to do or wasn't too sure what B-Roll is so from this we all know what to do for when we create our news report.

Practice for News Report - Studio

News Report - Studio

Today's lesson was basically carrying on from last lesson when we were on location filming for the news report. Instead, we were in the studio in Mount Pleasant to film the anchor roll. Due to illness from Elesha, she couldn't do her roll, so Katie volunteered to be the Anchor. We all worked together to set up the green screen, lights, camera, sound and also props to use.

My job was being the sound operator as for when me and my group create our news report, I will be on sound so from being on sound and getting some practice from my lecture Dave will help me for when it comes to doing our news report so I would know what I am doing on the day. As you can see in the pictures above, we were trying to get the look like you see on the news on TV today with the anchor behind the desk with either paper in front of them or a laptop so went and used the laptop.

Today's lesson was useful as we had more practice with setting up the green screen and also knowing now how to film for the news report which gave me and my group a lot more confidents and ideas for what to create.

Practice for News Report - On Location

News Report - On Location

Today for Dave's lesson, he told us that we are going to practice creating a news report. Our lecture came up and created his own script for today's lesson based on Jack and Jill and picked on us on who's doing what for today's task. He picked me to take part in acting and my role was being the witness during this news report called Miss Dumpty, Liam was also picked to be actor and his role was the reporter and also Elesha role was the Anchor while everyone else was taking part in using all the equipment to film us.

We were very lucky with the weather as it was very sunny out so we all decided to go out and film the report and witness role outside. Dave our lecture was the director and he wanted us to film right by the Mount Pleasant halls for our reporter (Liam) to explain where the incident happened.

The pictures below shows our set on location for the news report while we film Liam during is role as a reporter.

Once we filmed and finished with Liam's parts, it was my turn to be filmed for my part which is being the witness for this report. My job was to listen to where the director wants me to stand and where to look and at first he wanted me to stand directly into the camera and look straight into it while saying my lines.

We ended up not using this video because it was a bad shot for a witness so I ended up looking sidewards to Liam while the camera was next to me which makes it look more realistic for a news report when a reporter is speaking to the witness and the witness looking at the reporter telling him about the incident. This made it a lot better because as I said it looked more realistic compared to the first shot we took with me just looking straight into the camera. We then took another shot so the camera was over my shoulder showing that I was talking to the reporter and that he looked interested in my story about the incident.

There were many problems while filming on location today. Due to us given the script on the day it took Liam ages to film as he kept forgetting his lines and he had to remember them straight away. Other problems that happened were that as it was a sunny day, the clouds kept moving in front of the sun now and again which change the lighting so we had to wait until the lighting was right again, there were many students and staff walking past that you can here them talk, walking, cars driving off etc which interfiered with our sound while trying to record for mine and Liam's lines so we had to stop majority of the time and also as Liam kept forgetting his lines, the time that he finished and we had to film me, the camera battery was very low on one bar so we basically had to rush our way through my lines to finish off the location part of the news report. We also ran out of time to film for Elesha part of being the Anchor in the studio as our lesson was finished so we had to film her part for next lesson. Apart from all the problems, I really enjoyed the lesson as Dave helped us a lot to come up with ideas for a story and also how to film on location properly.

Practice with Green Screen 1

Practice with Green Screen

Today in Dave's lesson, we had a practice using the green screen. He showed us a short film made by past students that used a green screen to create a man sitting down his table in a lighthouse. Our task for today's lesson was to recreate that short film. The video underneath shows the video we had to recreate by the end of the lesson.

While setting the green screen, lights, camera etc, I thought that I would time-lapse while we all set up the equipment. Miriam was the actress for this short recreation of the film, my job was on camera and the boys jobs was to be in charge of setting up with lights and also the sound.

I really enjoyed this lesson because I have never used green screen before and it's the one thing I've always wanted to do and learn from as it is used a lot in today's programmes and films so it was really exciting to learn and listen from. This was helpful as well because our next short 1 minute film is a news report and we would need to use a green screen for it so from watching and learning from today's lesson will help me and my group to create the news report.

List of Tools for Sound and Sound Crew

Today's Lesson

Today in Manolo's lesson, we have learnt more about sound. I was glad he went over sound today as I haven't had much experience with sound and not knowing what the tools and equipment are for them so from today I was happy with the lesson.  He went over what equipment you use while we on set for a film and also who is in the sound crew and what do they do as their jobs.

Here is a list of tools that he has told us for sound:

List of Tools -
-Microphones
- Blip - Use outdoors because of the wind
- Softie
- Boom Pole
- Location Mixer - Mixes Sound
- Location Recorder
- Headphones
- XLR Balanced Cables

Other Important Tools -
- Batteries
- Charger
- Extension Cable
- Media Cards
- Sound Report
- Clapper Board when shooting

This was very handy and useful information to know because when it's my turn to be in charge of the sound for our groups one minute film, I know what equipment I need to bring along with me and also what spares I need in order to become better and to have a better understanding.

Sound Crew -
- Supervising Sound Editor - Creative role, works with the director, picture editor and producer
- Location Recordist/Mixer - Records the dialogue on set
- Dialogue Editor - Edits and assembles the dialogue
- SFX Editor - Sound effects editors
- Foley Artists - Create actual foley sounds for the film
- Music Mixer - Recording and mixing music
- Music Supervisor - Process of choosing negotating and incorporating pieces of music
- Re -recording Mixers - Team of engineers who mix the soundtrack of the project

This information again was very useful because this shows how many different roles are there in the sound crew and could help me in future projects so I would roughly know what my role is and the job and tasks I would have to carry out.

Camera Report - Two Way Converstion

Camera Report

Here is a report I took and wrote down during shooting for this short film. The reason why we have to have camera log with us is because these documents is where you track details such as lenses, filters, and other camera settings for each shot. These reports are useful in a variety of scenarios like in post-production when an editor needs to replicate a lens for a digital effect or when you are shooting the reverse angle of a shot and need to match the look of the original closeup. So it is very important to bring a camera report. sound report etc to set with you to keep on track.

Here are some pictures that were took during filming for our Two Way Conversation Film and also some still shots I have screenshotted from our film.

Project 2 - Two Way Conversation Analysis

Two Way Conversation

Here a list of who's in my group and the roles within the group for this project.

My group:

Director - Rhianwen Davies
Lights/Boom Operator - Emily Barresi
Camera Operator - Kimberly McClarnan
Production Sound Mixer - Liam King

Actors:
Alex Jones
Isabel Morgan

Camera Operator -
My role during our second project was setting up all the equipment to use for the camera and also make sure that it is fully charged. I took out and used a Canon 60D from stores in the university followed by a tripod and made sure I had an SD card. I followed the directors instruction on where she wanted to put the camera to film different shot types for example we used close up shots, long shots, mid shots, over the shoulder shots etc. Before filming for a shot, I made sure that the object I was filming was in focus and made sure that the director was happy with the shot so we could go ahead and film it. After ever shot I filmed, I called the director over to make sure that she was happy with the shots before we moved on to another shot. Some I was filming, you could see the boom coming into shot so I had to stop recording and tell the director so we can re-shoot again and make sure that Emily, who was in charge of the boom wasn't going to be in shot again.

Overall Performance -
For this project, I thought it was so much better than the first filming we did for Film Noir. This is basically because we had better actors who remembered their lines quicker and they didn't laugh as much or they didn't forget any of their lines and we managed to film in 3 hours. We all carried out our roles properly and made sure that the director was happy with her choices before moving on. There were some parts that I felt were tricky which was when I had to keep a certain picture in focus while its being moved across the table so my shot for that was a pan and I had to take a few shots because the picture kept going out of focus and also at one point I was moving the camera slow then fast. We eventually got over that point as I managed to get it right and the director was happy with that shot. I enjoyed filming for this short film as the story and script that Rhianwen made up was interesting and good so I enjoyed using the camera to film it and having more experience.

Problems? -
There were a few problems during filming that we all found and pointed out. As we shot this in the studio, during filming, Liam who was on sound could here people talking and walking up and down the corridors which we obviously didn't want, there were a lot of shadows shown from the lighting so Emily had to make it right and do them shots again and also the batteries in the sound kept running out so we had to keep changing them over again. When Rhianwen made an assembly edit to show to the class, there were so many mistakes we made but at the time when we were filming, we kept looking back in the camera seeing if anything was in shot, to see if everything in focus and to see if there was any shadows about but it was all perfect but when it was showed on screen there were lots of mistakes which was strange.

Practice on Two Way Conversation with Class 2

Practice Filming in Studio

In Manolo's lesson, we did another little practice again with the Two Way Conversation before we start filming. As a class, we all came up with the set of the scene and just had a settee but made it look like it's been set in a living room looking homely. I volunteered to be the actor for this little practice run with Miriam and we both had to make up a break up story from scratch as we didn't have a script. The photo below shows me and Miriam on set.

I then wanted to swap and had a go again of being the Camera Operator as that's my role for the next film to have a bit more experience using it and getting to know the camera. It also helped me by thinking of what shot types and angles I could use with help from my lecture. The pictures below show what the set looked like that we all set up together and also showed the roles that everyone took part in. I enjoyed these lessons as they are practical and also a massive help when it comes to making films and putting ideas together.
